Tree Trunk Face – Bird House – Grumpy Old Man

A small garden becomes more watched, more curious, with a hand-carved wooden bird house tucked among leaves. Made from jempinis wood with seagrass detail, it offers wild birds a front opening while bringing the rough charm of a carved tree-trunk face to a balcony, patio or sheltered outdoor corner.

What gives it its character

The bark-like outer surface keeps the feeling close to a cut tree trunk, with natural texture rather than a polished garden-ornament finish.

The carved face has deep brows, a long nose and a downturned, open mouth, giving the piece its old-man expression.

The dark entrance sits within the mouth, so the practical bird-house opening becomes part of the sculpture.

A braided cord is visible at the top, useful for hanging the piece in a chosen spot.

The warm wood tones sit easily with terracotta pots, weathered stone, herbs and leafy planting.

For quiet visitors in the garden

This is a decorative bird house with an entrance at the front for birds to use. Place it where you can enjoy watching the small movements of garden life without putting it somewhere too exposed or busy.

As with any bird house, the best spot is calm, stable and away from regular disturbance. A sheltered wall, balcony beam or tree branch can make it feel part of the garden rather than an object simply placed there.

Jempinis wood, seagrass and carved expression

It is hand-carved in Indonesia from jempinis wood, with seagrass included in the design. The front is shaped into a detailed face, while the outer trunk surface keeps a rustic, natural look.

Because the material is natural and the carving is done by hand, small differences in grain, colour and expression are part of the piece’s character.

Placing it well and caring for it

Hang or position it in a sheltered outdoor place, away from constant rain and strong wind where possible. Natural wood and seagrass age more gently when they are not left in prolonged damp.
