By combining one FLD ("F" Low Dispersion) glass element, which boasts performance equivalent to fluorite, and three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements, chromatic aberration is corrected to the absolute minimum. Lateral chromatic aberration, which is particularly noticeable at the telephoto end and does not improve even when stopped down, is corrected intensively through the use of special low-dispersion glass and optimized power distribution. High image quality is achieved across the entire zoom range. The inclusion of a Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) enables faster autofocus speeds and quieter operation. Furthermore, the drive algorithm has been significantly revised from previous models. It features a dustproof and splashproof structure, zoom locks for each focal length indicator, water-repellent and stain-resistant coating, a manual focus switch at hand, and a newly designed tripod mount, among other specifications that enhance the basic functions necessary for photography.
